The Access Thyroid Uptake assay indirectly assesses the unsaturated binding capacity of certain serum proteins, primarily TBG. This, in conjunction with total T4 measurement, allows for a better estimate of the amount of endogenous circulating thyroid hormone-an indirect indication of thyroid function.
